Membership & Acknowledgements
Governance of the Greek subcommittee of Alumni Association is by the Greek Board of Directors, hereafter referred to the “the Greek Board”
Recognizing that Greek organizations represent a cross section of all other academic and social membership organizations, sports teams and academic areas of study within the University’s alumni pool. As such, the Greek Board may act as a conduit to various groups to obtain ‘in-kind’ as well as monetary sponsorship for various projects that both advance undergraduate Greek organizations membership and continuity as well as academic achievement and advancement for all students of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
The members of the Greek Board believe that great advantages are derived from Greek association, appreciating that close association as undergraduates promotes friendship, develops character and assists in the acquisition of a sound education. Furthermore, Greek association promotes personal and professional business development amongst alumni.
Alumni in the 18-34 demographic are giving less money than in the past to Universities[1]. However, the Greek bonds create an emotional “hook” with which Alumni wish to see their legacy carry on into the future.

The purpose of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Greek Alumni Council, the GAC, shall be to
- Promote the welfare and interest of the Greek Fraternal and Sorority organizations’ alumni at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
- Promote and cement the bond between the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Greek Alumni, and undergraduates.
- Foster closer cooperation between Greek Alumni and the institution and shall support and assist in academic and professional development and networking.
Duties
- Coordinate Greek Alumni Activities on a regional basis (eg Kappa Delta Rho sponsored “Tailgate for the Cure” now in it’s 6th year in Pittsburgh; Delta Chi “Steeplechase”)
- Homecoming “Alumni Rush’ – staged on a five year rotation (e.g., In 2014 the following graduation years would be targeted: 1974 (4 year degrees granted in 1970), 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009). This is similar to the targeting during freshman rush weeks. It is targeted to the year you STARTED at the University as opposed to graduation year primarily because a.) not all Greek Alumni graduated from the UPJ and b.) not all graduated in 4 years (in keeping with university graduation statistics)
- Special Projects – e.g., “Save the Log Cabin” (“Greek Forum”)
- Alumni Speaker Program – According to Inside Higher Ed: “Schools need to reevaluate what constitutes ‘giving.’ A recent graduate may not be able to afford an annual gift of $200, but if they help a rising senior find a job, isn’t that worth something?... ”[1]
- All Greek Reunions – This would have to be discussed to take advantage of different demographic priorities (empty nesters vs. just married, parents of toddlers, etc)
