Before a crowd of about 60 people Saturday, fraternity brothers and Sodexo staff battled out a tough game of basketball in the Sports Center gymnasium.

It was a close game at halftime, with the Greeks winning 25-19, but the Sodexo staff was able to pull through and win the game in overtime 52-50.

Fraternity members squared off against Sodexo staff to raist money for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots.
Inner Fraternity Council President Ryan Kern said that one of the Sodexo workers approached them wanting to do a philanthropic event.

“It was actually Al [Lawton] who came to us and asked if we could do a combined philanthropic event,” says Kern.

“We decided to support Toys for Tots charity because it seemed festive and appropriate for the season. We wanted to help the kids out during the holidays.”

Kern said that they raised a lot of money as well as toys for the charity.

Lawton was one of the biggest contributors to the event.

“I just love the kids,” said Lawton.

Lawton played a hard game against the Greeks. After the game, he donated a dollar for every point that was scored, $102.

Even though his team lost Saturday, Jeff Wojnovich said he was happy because he was playing for a good cause.

“I love basketball and I love (to give to) charity,” said Wajnovich, who played on the Greek’s team.

“I had a lot of fun playing against the Sodexo workers that I see every day. This should definitely be annual so that more people can experience it, and it can become a much bigger event. We could really raise a lot of money.”

Funds raised were donated to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots.

Not only did members of fraternities like Wojnovich’s Delta Chi donate money, but so did sorority members.

Alexis Prusick, a spectator Saturday and President of Alpha Sigma Alpha, says that she is happy that the fraternity and sorority members support each other with events like the basketball game.

“It’s really nice that we all have each others’ backs and help out with our fellow Greeks philanthropic events,” said Prusick. “And the actual game was a lot of fun, too.”
