We have subsequently removed the physical address from UPJ from the website.
Subject: UPJ Greek Alumni Website
To: Mellissia Zanjani, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown
It was brought to our attention that at the last Alumni Association meeting, just over a week ago, you expressed concern about the address of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown appearing in the footer of the UPJ Greeks website.
You stated there there could be "potential legal ramifications" of the usage of the University's address on the website without the University's permission.
Please be advised that we will be more than happy to remove the address if that is your desire.
When we began developing the website to document the robust history of the Greek organizations contributions to the University, it was in conjunction with Jesse Pisors when he held your title. Jesse had encouraged us to use the UPJ Address for any physical correspondence that might be needed to be sent. The address was placed in the footer at his verbal request.
Mr Pisors felt that this could help cultivate a better relationship amongst Greek Alumni who felt shunned by the University Administration and the UPJ Alumni Association. We placed it there at his request in the spirit of improving relations.
We also added the following to the home page of the website which Mr Pisors approved:
"The Greek Alumni Council (GAC) is an wholly independent organization comprised of Fraternity and Sorority Alumni of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. It is not directly affiliated with any Greek letter organizations other the the composition of the organization is wholly Fraternity and Sorority Alumni from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. It is not governed, nor a part of: The University of Pittsburgh, The University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association and or it's branches and subsidiaries. Although, from time-to-time, the GAC does collaborate with all of the aforementioned organizations. The GAC is a non-profit organization created and established for non-business purposes which are charitable, educational or scientific within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3). All images and information on this site are for purposes such as "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research." Any images that reference the University of Pittsburgh or it's affiliates are to be considered derivative works that have had substantial modification so as not to be confused with any branding or trademarks of the University of Pittsburgh and/or it's affiliates.
The Address will be removed from the website effective Friday 1 November 2018 unless you can provide us something in writing on University letterhead authorizing the Greek Alumni Council to use the physical address. We feel that we need something in writing for our reference in the future given the short tenure of so many who have held your position in the past 10 years and the lack of record keeping.
You can email the authorization, as an attachment, to this email address with your reply. Please "reply to all" on this email. This email address is used for information related to our more permanent record keeping.
Thank you for your time. We look forward to your prompt reply to this matter.
Best Regards,
Bernard Martin
